Heating Glass-Step 1
In the toughening process, the surfaces of the glass are heated in a furnace.at or over 620°C, depending on type of glass and thickness, it could be as high as 700°C,.
Cooling Glass Rapidly-Step 2
The hot glass is then cooled rapidly by a blast of air over a period of between 3 and 10 seconds. As a result, the surfaces shrink, and (at first) tensile stresses develop on both sides of glass the surfaces.
Washing Glass and Drying-Step 3
After washing and drying, the tempered/toughened glass is made. Unlike toughened glass, when annealed glass breaks, it shatters into sharp, large, and hazardous shards. On the other hand, toughened glass shatters into small, harmless pieces that reduce the risk of injury. The toughened glass has the same look as the annealed glass, but its strengthen is 4 to 5 times higher than its counterpart of annealed glass at the same thickness.
